THE HIGH CALLING OF SERVANTHOOD
Being a servant of God is serious business. Jesus made this very clear when he
said to the crowds, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny
themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” This instruction followed
closely the confession of Peter. When Jesus asked the disciples, “Who do
you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of
the living God.”
From that point, Jesus began to teach his disciples what it meant
to be a disciple
who called Jesus, “The Christ.” Jesus told them, “Those who
find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will
find it.” After all, he said, it would not profit a person to gain the
whole world if he or she forfeits their life. The call of Jesus is a call to
servanthood. It is equally clear that this call to servanthood is a high calling.
The Old Testament refers to the coming Messiah as a servant of
the Father and the New Testament confirms that this Servant of
the Father is Jesus (Acts 3:13).
King David is often called a servant of God (2 Sam 3:18). The Apostle Paul thought
of himself as a servant; “Of this gospel I have become a servant according
to the gift of God’s grace…” (Eph 3:7). To be a servant of
God Most High is to be in a position of honor: “Whoever serves me, the
Father will honor.” (John 12:26) Jesus continued to instruct his disciples
on the meaning of serving him, coming to his final instruction that we know as
the Great Commission; “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt
28:19).
This is who we want to be at OMS International, servants of
Jesus Christ engaged in the high calling of taking the gospel
message to all nations. This is also precisely who we want
to join us in this honorable task, men and women who are willing
to be servants of the gospel according to the gift of God’s
grace. Won’t you join us?
In Christ,
David Long
