Helmut and Tina Markeli
Helmut and Tina were both born in East Germany but came to Canada at different times. Tina’s family arrived in Canada in 1951 and eventually settled in Vancouver, BC. It was there that Tina gave her heart to God and felt His clear call to missions when she was 10 years old. That call has never left her. She was active in her local church and got “on the job” training in children’s work, youth work, and sharing God’s Word. After her training as a medical laboratory technologist and a semester at Hillcrest
Christian College in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Tina applied to One Mission Society and went to Haiti to work in the Bethesda Medical Clinic in 1969. Helmut did not come to personal faith in God until he was an adult living in West Berlin. After his arrival in Edmonton, Alberta, he attended a church where he grew in the faith. A few years later, God clearly called Him to give up his job and go to Hillcrest Christian College. He completed his Bachelor of Theology degree adding a year at Aldersgate College in Moose Jaw, SK. Applying to OMS, he was assigned to the Every Community for Christ evangelism teams in Haiti in March, 1972. After Helmut finished his short-term in Haiti, and Tina had extended her term to five years, they were married in Vancouver in August 1976 and were assigned to help the Every Community for Christ work in a newly opened field in the South Pacific. In the South Pacific Helmut and Tina worked with the church planting teams, taught in the OMS-related seminaries there, and discipled students and younger workers. In their last term they were stationed in another location in the South Pacific, from where they helped four church planting teams establish congregations and two new teams begin work. In May 2006, the Markelis returned to Edmonton, Alberta, having completed almost 30 years in the South Pacific. Helmut has reached retirement age however the Markelis have agreed to take on homeland duties representing OMS in Western Canada. They will promote prayer ministries, help with recruitment of new workers and assist with member care of OMS workers, particularly those from Canada. |

Spending of funds raised by One Mission Society is confined to programs approved by the organization. Each restricted contribution designated toward such an approved program or project will be used as designated with the understanding that when the need for such a program or project has been met, or cannot be completed for any reason determined by One Mission Society, the remaining contributions will be used by One Mission Society where the need is greatest.
